Tristen: Hello everyone! Welcome back to another episode of our Camrose Public Library Book Tastings. For those of you who may be new to the series, Georgia, what is a book tasting?

Georgia: It’s quite the challenge to find your next great read, so our Book Tastings aim to help peak your interest in a genre that you may not have explored before. Which age group and genre are we focusing on today Tristen?

Tristen: Our Book Tasting today explores some Young Adult novels that feature LGBTQ2S+ characters. Given how literature is a reflection of social change and societal beliefs, it is great to see increasing representation of the Queer community within many of today’s novels. Now without further ado, let us get into it!

Georgia: You Should See Me in a Crown by Leah Johnson

  • Liz Lighty has always believed she's too black, too poor, too awkward to shine in her small, rich, prom-obsessed midwestern town. But it's okay -- Liz has a plan that will get her out of Campbell, Indiana, forever: attend the uber-elite Pennington College, play in their world-famous orchestra, and become a doctor.
  • But when the financial aid she was counting on unexpectedly falls through, Liz's plans come crashing down . . . until she's reminded of her school's scholarship for prom king and queen. There's nothing Liz wants to do less than endure a gauntlet of social media trolls, catty competitors, and humiliating public events, but despite her devastating fear of the spotlight she's willing to do whatever it takes to get to Pennington.
  • The only thing that makes it halfway bearable is the new girl in school, Mack. She's smart, funny, and just as much of an outsider as Liz. But Mack is also in the running for queen. Will falling for the competition keep Liz from her dreams . . . or make them come true?
  • If you like: stories about underdogs with all the drama of prom you just might love You Should See Me in a Crown by Leah Johnson

Tristen: Cemetery Boys by Aiden Thomas

  • Yadriel has summoned a ghost, and now he can’t get rid of him.
  • When his traditional Latinx family has problems accepting his gender, Yadriel becomes determined to prove himself a real brujo. With the help of his cousin and best friend Maritza, he performs the ritual himself, and then sets out to find the ghost of his murdered cousin and set it free.
  • However, the ghost he summons is actually Julian Diaz, the school’s resident bad boy, and Julian is not about to go quietly into death. He’s determined to find out what happened and tie up some loose ends before he leaves. Left with no choice, Yadriel agrees to help Julian, so that they can both get what they want. But the longer Yadriel spends with Julian, the less he wants to let him leave.
  • If you like ghost stories with sarcastic protagonists you’ll love Cemetery Boys by Aiden Thomas

Georgia: The Miseducation of Cameron Post by Emily M Danforth

  • When Cameron Post's parents die suddenly in a car crash, her shocking first thought is relief. Relief they'll never know that, hours earlier, she had been kissing a girl.
  • But that relief doesn't last, and Cam is soon forced to move in with her conservative aunt Ruth and her well-intentioned but hopelessly old-fashioned grandmother. She knows that from this point on, her life will forever be different. Survival in Miles City, Montana, means blending in and leaving well enough alone (as her grandmother might say), and Cam becomes an expert at both.
  • Then Coley Taylor moves to town. Beautiful, pickup-driving Coley is a perfect cowgirl with the perfect boyfriend to match. She and Cam forge an unexpected and intense friendship--one that seems to leave room for something more to emerge. But just as that starts to seem like a real possibility, ultrareligious Aunt Ruth takes drastic action to "fix" her niece, bringing Cam face-to-face with the cost of denying her true self--even if she's not exactly sure who that is.
  • The Miseducation of Cameron Post is a stunning and unforgettable literary debut about discovering who you are and finding the courage to live life according to your own rules
  • If you like coming of age stories filled with reflection The Miseducation of Cameron Post by Emily M. Danforth might be the book for you!

But when a school competition invites students to create their own businesses, both Flávia and Nishat choose to do henna, even though Flávia is appropriating Nishat’s culture. Georgia: Georgia Peaches and Other Forbidden Fruit by Jaye Robin Brown

And Jo reluctantly agrees.
  • Although it is (mostly) much easier for Jo to fit in as a straight girl, things get complicated when she meets Mary Carlson, the oh-so-tempting sister of her new friend at school. But Jo couldn’t possibly think of breaking her promise to her dad. Even if she’s starting to fall for the girl. Even if there’s a chance Mary Carlson might be interested in her, too. Right?
  • If your favourite movie is a heartfelt rom com, Georgia Peaches and Other Forbidden Fruits by Jaye Robin Brown might be your new fave.

Tristen: Dreadnought by April Daniels

  • Danny Tozer has a problem: she just inherited the powers of Dreadnought, the world’s greatest superhero.
  • Until Dreadnought fell out of the sky and died right in front of her, Danny was trying to keep people from finding out she’s transgender. But before he expired, Dreadnought passed his mantle to her, and those secondhand superpowers transformed Danny’s body into what she’s always thought it should be. Now there’s no hiding that she’s a girl.
  • It should be the happiest time of her life, but Danny’s first weeks finally living in a body that fits her are more difficult and complicated than she could have imagined. Between her father’s dangerous obsession with “curing” her girlhood, her best friend suddenly acting like he’s entitled to date her, and her fellow superheroes arguing over her place in their ranks, Danny feels like she’s in over her head.
  • She doesn’t have much time to adjust. Dreadnought’s murderer—a cyborg named Utopia—still haunts the streets of New Port City, threatening destruction. If Danny can’t sort through the confusion of coming out, master her powers, and stop Utopia in time, humanity faces extinction.
  • If you’re a fan of superhero origin stories try Dreadnought by April Daniels.
